Czar orphans – Chicagoland traditional hot rods Searched for this old thread to share a story about Auto Meter. Da Tinman has been making many “tasty” mods to my coupe the past few months at his shop. While working on the new recessed instrument cluster he set the speedo on his bench. When he next picked it up he noticed that the needle had broken in half. He called Moon in California to see if they could repair it and was told they don’t repair them. He asked the cost of a new one and was told they don’t sell just the speedo, he’d have to buy a gauge set! He gave them a call and found out the unit was repairable but they weren’t allowed to touch it without permission from Moon! So he called back to Moon to request permission in writing – they complied and faxed a letter to Auto Meter.

Measuring the resistance in the ‘Full’ position of the float gave readings between ohms. Measuring the resistance in the ‘Empty’ position of the float gave readings between ohms. As mentioned above, a fuel tank sending unit is nothing more than a variable resistor, and the fuel gauge is simply measuring the resistance between the hot wire and the ground. The fuel tank sending units used on all Ford products up through have a resistance range of approximately ohms full and ohms empty. The thin metal wipe glides along the wrapped wires, and the resistance is measured between the end of the resistor and the end of the metal tang.
This wipe can be carefully bent, if needed, to make better contact with the wound resistor wire.

If the indication is full the sender is bad. If all else fails, read the book, although it will probably tell you the same thing. BTW, it does not matter the model, all old Mopars are likely to use a similar setup. If you want to see how fast your oil pressure is really rising, get a mechanical actually, hydro-mechanical gauge and temporarily install it in the same location as your electrical gauge sending unit. I have one I use for testing oil pressure and pumps on freshly rebuilt but not yet operated engines.
Apr 12, · i have the autometer Air/Fuel Ratio gauge in my car. i spliced into the o2 sensor from the ecu i cant remember which wire it was or if it was the front ot rear sensor but check out that guy has a great write up on it and many other gauge installs. If you hook up the sensor to the rear O2 signal wire, you’ll most.

That said, did you ever get a DVOM to test your connections with? You really should verify the wires you’re connecting to are indeed the correct wires, regardless of what a wiring diagram or some random person on the internet says.
This image is relevant to your situation. Is this the wire you tapped into? Have you verified that the T-tap actually penetrated the wire’s insulation, and that you have power at the gauge? That DVOM would sure come in handy for this. Have you verified the integrity of this wire over its entire length? Your sender is new. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t bad.

Whether you’re towing a stock trailer or racing down the quarter mile, having the ability to monitor vital engine statistics is extremely crucial. We carry a full line of analog gauges from ISSPRO and Autometer, and for those that prefer a digital interface that allows for a plethora of information in a small, easy to install package, the Edge Insight line. We also carry mounting systems from Autometer. Just remember, no matter what, you can never have too many gauges.
Read More On all diesel trucks, having the ability to monitor exhaust gas temperature is critical, so having a good pyrometer is a must. All pyrometer EGT gauges come complete with gauge, wiring, and thermocouple for drilling into the exhaust stream. For owners of automatic transmission trucks, having a gauge to properly monitor transmission oil temperature is a great idea we have found the factory gauge to be very inaccurate. Another very important gauge is a fuel pressure gauge.
Finally, one of the last popular gauge options for your 6. So whether you choose to run analog or digital gauges, we’ve go the gauge and the mount for you.

Wb’s are not compatible with our engine controllers as they are a 5v linear outputting sensor. They work by the engine controller reading the value and trimming the fuel in the opposing direction, then when it swings to the other side the engine controller will command fueling to swing it back. This provides a sine wave of sorts as o2 continually goes from slightly richer than stoich to slightly leaner than stoich in an oscillating manner.
The controller then reads this data as a running average and works out an percentage of where fueling spends more time leaner or richer than stoich. This average initially becomes your short term fuel trims and as the short term trims then become averaged they get applied as long term fuel trims which are saved in memory. Having a nb gauge is a nonsense. All you will see is the oscillation which on it’s own means nothing except that the sensor is working.
A wb solution which is somewhat attractive is one that outputs the 5v wb signal for display on a gauge and also a 1v signal that inside the wb controller is generated to provide nb simulation signal for use with the factory engine controller. IMO these are all well and good, but I have a hard time trusting the simulation software to offer an exact representation of a normal nb sensor. If it were on it’s own I wouldn’t have an issue.
Same as if I were to run 2 of them. But to run one conventional nb and one wb simulating nb, I think there would be variances which would result in differing bank trims seeing as trims are applied bank dependently. The best solution I believe is to leave the OEM o2’s on board and get an extra bung fitted pre cat for the wb sensor to go in independently.

Wiring the stock gauges: It’s not the same as factory. It is ohms empty and 33 ohms full. You would have to use Ultralite gauge with the Motorsport sender. Has anyone had any problems with and the stock sender. The Helm shop manual for lists the stock sender as 33 ohms empty and full.

What I was trying to convey was most of the times you have something grounded to the car somewhere but it has to go through multiple connections before it all connects together. Have things worked before this way before, yes.
Look at how a factory fuel gauge works. You have power and ground going to the gauge and then a sending unit wire that goes to the gas tanks sender and this then is tied back to the gauge through it being grounded back by the back bumper. What I’m seeing on more and more cars now days is instead of using the car body as a ground return path they are running back dedicated ground wires. To me this makes sense and I did it on my 73 years ago when I rewired it.
On mine I have the headlights no longer grounded to the radiator support but now the headlights ground terminal goes all the way back to a ground bar next to the battery in the trunk. In my case I’m no longer expecting a good ground connection to the radiator support, a good ground connection between the radiator support and the fender, and good ground connection from the fender to the battery.
I’ve seen and had problems with things being grounded to something like a fender and even though it is bolted to another section of metal it may be mechanically solid but electrically poor. You can have something grounded to a fender and have this connection electrically solid but if the fender is all painted up and bolted to the car the metal inside the fender is being insulated by the paint so it cannot transfer electrical signals through this connection.
To me it’s a good idea to run a power wire or signal wire to a sender and then using wire and solid connections also run back a return path wire. I’ve seen too many guys putting in things like door poppers, door lock actuators, or power windows in cars and some of these have a ground wire that a person just grounds inside the door.
